As I get ready to start releasing new episodes of Thrift: What Your Garage Sale Says About You, I wanted to share something with you all that I’ve been mulling over for a little while: offering a paid subscription option for the podcast and newsletter.
This is something that I’m thinking of testing out during the second season, but I find asking for money to fund my creative work extremely awkward. The fact is that podcasting takes a lot of time and effort, and I’d like to make all the time I put into it more valuable so that I can keep putting out episodes.
So, I want to see if any of you lovely people would be interested in paying a small fee to help me create even more content to share with you. Plus, you’ll get exclusive offerings like episodes and transcripts before they hit the regular podcast feed, full unedited interviews with guests, and special discounts to shop in my soon-to-open online thrift store.
I’m hoping this will allow me to write and podcast more for people who want it. But if these paid subscriptions don’t work out, I’ll stop. If they do succeed, then I’ll be able to create even more content for you to enjoy.
Good question. I don't think I'm ready for Patreon just yet. For the immediate future, I'm planning to use Substack, which is what I use to send newsletters and show notes. With Substack, I can send paid subscribers exclusive content for a small fee a month. For people who have already subscribed, it will be $3 a month. For new subscribers who want to receive premium content, it will be $5 a month. And, of course, I'll continue to publish lots of free content.
How would you do it? Patreon?

Is Substack equipped to handle the payment processing?
Substack requires users to connect with Stripe, so payment processing would be handled through them.
