Thrift Podcast Holiday Gift Guide
'Tis the season to match the perfect gifts to your friends and loved ones. Need inspiration? Consider checking out these items from the stores of past podcast guests or the Thrift Podcast shop.
All over Brooklyn, you’ll see signs that read “Shop Brooklyn, not Bezos” in an effort to encourage New Yorkers to support local businesses this holiday season. As COVID-19 restrictions begin to tighten in the city, many of the shops I love are struggling to stay afloat, so I’ve been trying to stay away from Amazon when doing my Christmas shopping this year.
No matter where you live, small businesses could use your support. I’ve had the privilege to talk to a few business owners on the podcast these past 3 seasons, and I’ve put together this gift guide to help you finish your holiday shopping. Hope you’re able to find something for all your friends and loved ones.
Happy Holidays!
Maggie
The shops
Miss Master’s Closet. An online vintage shop with more than 350 items that have been cleaned and restored by Jess Master.
Mimsy Ello. Alesha will be featured on a future episode of the podcast. Founded in 2019 and based in Queens, Mimsy Ello features handcrafted products with a feminist message.
Dial V for Vintage. Philadelphia-based husband-and-wife team David and Celeste curate and sell vintage collectibles, oddities, books, and more.
Tiny Doors ATL. An Atlanta-based art project by Karen Anderson Singer, who aims to bring whimsy to public spaces by installing 7-inch doors around ATL. You can buy Tiny Doors merch from their online shop.
Obocho’s Closet. 11-year-old CEO Obocho Peters aims to make a difference by making everything in his store affordable for families. Consider shopping his wide range of children’s clothing.
Black Gold Records. This coffee, record, and oddity shop is right around the corner from me in Carroll Gardens, but they will ship whatever you order online right to your door.
For the caffeine addict
Black Gold Records’ 14oz. bag of their original blend coffee. The product description says it’s “a medium / dark roasted coffee with chocolate notes and a fine finish and aftertaste.”
For the prom queen
This pink taffeta formal dress from the 1930s-1940s is meant for your glamorous yet innocent friend. Restored by the lovely Jess Master, this prom gown is just one of the beautiful dresses you can find in Miss Master’s Closet.
For the sticker collector
Is there a young person in your life you need to shop for? What about a not-so-young person who just loves stickers and magnets? One thing’s for sure: If you know a millennial who was obsessed with Lisa Frank back in the day, they’ll definitely love this Tiny Doors merch. Consider supporting this Atlanta art project by purchasing a Fun Stuff Pack.
For the kitsch cook
Dial V for Vintage’s Kitsch Kitchen collection is a treasure trove of colorful and unique kitchenware, like this ceramic casserole dish from the 1950s or 1960s. Know someone who loves cooking retro dishes? This mid-century bowl is for them. Tuna Noodle Surprise, anyone?
For the radical cross-stitcher
Bought one of these cross-stitch designs at a crafters stoop sale over the summer. It now hangs in my kitchen. You, too, can hang an ‘Eat The Rich’ sign in your kitchen if you visit Mimsy Ello’s shop.
For your face
From Legos to makeup to aliens, Obocho’s Closet has a collection of handcrafted masks with patterns to suit everyone’s tastes. Have some kids on your holiday shopping list? Be sure to check out the different clothing collections on the site, as well.
For the person who has everything
Bet they don’t have a vintage papier-mâché cow mask. It’s the perfect gift to surprise (or terrify) the person in your life who already has everything.
